Wall Lamps or Art?

Even with a plan going into IKEA, it is hard to just walk by all of their interesting products. These wall lamps caught my eye because they are an inexpensive option that will give you an expensive look. In various sizes, patterns, and colors, they are perfect for any style, whether it be traditional or modern. They could flank a fireplace, or be used in your teenager’s bedroom as a stylish and graphic wall art. Don’t assume that you have to spend a lot of money for the look you want. There are thousands of ways to achieve a great look for less if you are willing to look. Share your ideas and don’t be afraid to get creative!

Organize, Decorate, and Save the IKEA Way!

Shopping at IKEA can be both exciting and overwhelming, it is very easy to get distracted so it’s important to know your budget and what you’re looking for before you head up the escalator into the unknown. My interns and I went in with the intention of finding creative storage solutions. While there were many possibilities, we liked these hanging baskets for only $19.99 each. They are perfect for any room. Hide those unsightly toys that clutter the floor in your child’s playroom, use them for laundry, magazines, supplies… their uses are endless. These versatile baskets can be arranged as a decorative set as well. When shopping for storage solutions, it is important not to be close minded. There are hundreds of ways to maximize spaces with storage that is cost effective and appropriate for any room. So be creative, and feel free to share your ideas!

It’s Intern Season

In just two weeks I will have two High School Interns working with me. Taylor and Katie are seniors at Ridgefield High School and they will be helping me with everything. We’ll be bringing you information about local shopping, decorating trends, college dorm decorating and more. Hope you’ll stay tuned and tell your friends. I’d also love to give them some field experience, so keep in mind you’ll get three for the price of one through June when their internship ends. Sign up now and save.

Brimfield is less than two weeks away!

I love this time of year. The weather is great everything is coming back to life and most important the outdoor antique show season begins!

One of the best in the East starts on May 8th. Located in Brimfield, MA, The Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles show is probably the largest in the country. According to their website there are over 5000 dealers in over 20 different fields. It is truly a maze of dealer after dealer and a great place to start the antiquing season.

Since the show is so large, you won’t be able to see everything in one day and you might go away empty-handed if you don’t stay focused on a few items. Some pretty standard advice is to wear comfortable shoes and clothes, bring a rolling cart if you have one, stay hydrated and enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Another word of advice, when you find something you like make sure it’s value is acceptable to you, it’s quite possible to find the same item with another dealer for less. I’ve seen this on several occasions and it’s always a little disturbing, but just like clothing and furniture,  collectibles and antiques have trends. You might want to do a little pricing research on Ebay or other antique and collectible sites, especially if you are looking for something in particular. Many of the dealers have web sites as well which might be worth viewing. You can always ask the dealer to bring the item to the show. You may also want to do a little research on the Brimfield website, each dealer rents space in a particular field and all fields are not open every day. The fields also seem to have their own style and some fields charge admission. There is plenty to see without paying admission, but if you are looking for something in particular, you may decide on one of the paying fields.  Brimfield Exchange is a good source for information or try

There are other sites about Brimfield but I leave it to you to discover them, please feel free to add them in your comments.

Well I’m heading to Brimfield next Friday, as always I’m looking for signs, garden accessories, interesting bar ware, fabrics and anything else that blows me away…I’ll let you know how I make out.

Great Idea!

ImageFor a recent bathroom remodel project, shades or any window treatment didn’t seem to be an option. While searching the isles of Home Depot, I came across decorative window films. At first I thought it might look tacky, but for $22.00 it seemed worth a try. I have to say it was easy and the results were fabulous! At some point I might add a valance, but for the time being I have a finished look and the necessary privacy for a bathroom, which is why I call this a great idea!

A Contemporary Stage

Before: An unusual staircase space.

Earlier this year, I staged a contemporary house. The owners were very motivated, receptive to ideas and had already done a lot of work. I mention this because it made my job much easier. The before picture you see is an unusual space at the foot of the basement stairs. Without spending too much money, we needed to find a way to simplify the spot without drawing too much attention. Take a look at the after picture and let me know what you think.    With a larger budget we probably would have eliminated the spot all together, but time and money were key and the house sold in just about a month.

From Beige to Brilliant

Kitchen Before

Choosing interior colors for your home can be a terrifying. I’ve had many clients ask for help with color and I’m surprised at how difficult it is for some people to make a color choice. The biggest reason seems to be fear of choosing the wrong color.

Kitchen After

Recently, I helped a customer who wanted a change in color and I started by talking about the furniture and pieces he already owned and liked.  I

then took clues from the colors of those existing pieces and tried to choose colors that complimented what they already owned. Below is the before and after for the kitchen. Tell me what you think and share your own color solutions.
How do you choose color for a room? Do you have a favorite interior color that seems to work no matter what?
